French artist. Born at La BasseĢe in 1761, Boilly began to paint at the age of twelve and received training from his father, Arnould Boilly, a wood-carver. Boilly moved to Paris around 1786 and in 1833 was awarded the Legion of Honour. He is said to have painted over 5,000 portraits.
